LumiSource - novel light source for 'in vitro' research

LumiSource® is a unique light source designed for the illumination of cells in in vitro experiments that can also be used as a general light source for photobiological and photochemical research.

High precision

Many technologies and treatments require illumination of cells in order to activate a biological process. In experiments with living cells and other material it is of great importance that the light intensity is homogeneous over the whole illumination area and that the intensity remains stable over time. The variation in light intensity should be minimised in order to get reproducible results from experiment to experiment. The illumination area should be large enough to treat many samples at the same time. Until now there has been no such light source on the market fulfilling these criteria.

LumiSource for photobiological and photochemical 'in vitro' research

LumiSource is designed to provide homogeneous illumination of living cells in in vitro laboratory research and to provide a stable, homogeneous irradiance over a defined illumination area of 45 x 17 cm.

Other light sources, which have not been optimised with respect to homogeneity of the output, show an intensity distribution of the light as seen in Fig 1. Without a proper cooling system, the irradiance will drop with time after ignition.

Fig. 1.The red line shows light intensity distribution for LumiSource. The black line shows the light distribution for a light source that has not been optimised.

The irradiance from LumiSource varies less than 10% across the illumination area, except for 1 cm from the corners in each direction where the intensity is 15% lower than in the rest of the area.
